space

[2023]

Space is a spatial audio experiece in AR that gives control to the user over the sound objects that exist in the augmented environment. Each object is  represented by a geometric shape which determines its behavior acoustically and spacially.

Each shape emits its assigned sound and behaves differently

Through the addition and the manipulation of each object the user can customize their session in order to create a personal piece or soundscape in 3D audio. Changes in motion and geometry correspond to audio alterations that are visually intuitive. The melody can progress in time through the collision of objects with rectangular panels representing notes.

The objective is to give a visual representation of spatial audio which doesn’t require any technical knowledge and can be experienced with accessible gear. The app, made using SwiftUI/ARKit, can run on a smartphone and can be experienced with the use of headphones.

An example interaction within the application. Angular velocity and scaling are affecting pitch and amplitude respectively.
