“This Must Be the Place” is a 4-minute non-linear audio and visual installation exploring the concept of home. Using projection mapping, videos are displayed on 10 separate pieces of fabric, suspended from the ceiling and placed symmetrically in space. The piece is further complemented by spatial audio, whereupon a soundtrack is the primary audio in the room besides a central circular area.

An overhead view of the setup, including projectors and speakers.

To achieve this effect, the audio is played back in 3 channels, each corresponding to an appropriately placed loudspeaker. The mono version of the soundtrack is coming out of two speakers positioned at opposite ends of the room. At the same time, an audio beam of a narrated passage is created in the middle of the room, using a directional speaker with an audible radius of 2 meters.

The audience is encouraged to roam around the space to explore the non-linear and spatial elements of the piece. At the end of the visuals, the audio sources are combined to fill the room with a narration of an algorithmic poem about ‘home’, while the poem gradually appears on the sides of the central circular piece.
